Plan ignition service by position and supplied quantity
Honda’s original breaker-points system uses two contact points and two condensers. The two point positions serve different cylinder pairs, while replacement electronic ignitions have their own coil requirements. Identify the system currently fitted before buying service parts.
For the original system, identify both point positions and inspect the two condensers. The left and right points are separate products, and the condenser is sold individually. Set point gaps before checking ignition timing for both cylinder pairs using the Honda procedure; the old mounting positions are not a timing setting.
Choose coils after identifying the ignition
The stock-type single coil is described for contact point ignition and lists 100mm mounting centres. Some performance choices have different resistance requirements, and an electronic-only coil is not compatible with points. Use your specific ignition manufacturer’s requirements before selecting a replacement or upgrade.
Questions that help you choose
Which contact point serves cylinders one and four?
The left-hand contact point listing identifies cylinders one and four. The right-hand part serves cylinders two and three. Each listing describes one contact point, so confirm the position and quantity you need before checkout.
Is the VD05F cap for every plug position?
Its description specifically identifies the two outer cylinders and states that two are required per bike. It is sold individually. Compare the existing cap type and the position being serviced before choosing among the different cap listings.
Can an electronic-only high-output coil be used with points?
The electronic-only high-output coil description explicitly excludes points systems. Other coil listings have their own compatibility and resistance information. Choose against the ignition fitted to your motorcycle rather than treating the term high-output as a universal compatibility claim.
