1982 Honda CB900F Supersport · Fork Service Tools Buying guide

Confirm the fork size before buying the driver

The carbon-steel split driver is listed for 39mm fork-seal installation and the 1981–82 CB900F. Its conventional-or-inverted description still requires the correct size; it is not an adjustable tool for every fork.

Use the fitted fork as the starting point

The tool application covers the 1981–82 CB900F, but a replacement fork may call for a different driver. Establish which fork is installed and consult its service information. The frame year cannot resolve a tooling mismatch after a front-end swap.

Keep driver size and seal specification distinct

Honda’s F fork procedure uses a dedicated seal driver and a defined order for the oil seal, retaining ring and dust seal. The 39mm split tool is a catalog alternative for that nominal fork size. Follow the actual fork and tool instructions; a changed front end needs a new size check.

Buying questions

Why use a seal driver instead of tapping the seal with a screwdriver?

The correctly sized driver supports the seal evenly and helps avoid damaging its lip or the fork tube. Inspect the tube and seal seat first, then follow the fork procedure for orientation and seating. A driver cannot correct a scored tube or a damaged bore.

Does the 39mm tool size give all the dimensions needed to buy a seal?

No. It identifies the nominal fork-tube application. The listed F oil seal has the separate full dimensions 39 × 52 × 11mm. Match the installed fork, the seal and the driver independently after any front-end change.

What else should be ready before dismantling the forks?

Have the correct seals, any needed dust seals or bushings, suitable measuring equipment and the F service procedure ready. Inspect retaining-ring grooves and sealing surfaces during the job. Release fork air pressure as directed before disassembly; the driver is only one tool in the repair.
