Separate cranking, starter engagement and charging faults

A starter that does not turn, a motor that spins without turning the engine and a battery that will not stay charged point to different checks. Identify the symptom before choosing brushes, a relay, starter-clutch parts or a regulator.

Choose parts for the failed assembly

The Mitsuba starter brush set is for the specified two-brush motor; compare the actual motor if it has been replaced. The alternator uses a separate brush pair for the electromagnetic rotor. Starter-clutch rollers, caps and springs belong to the mechanical drive and will not repair a failed relay or battery cable.

Diagnose the charging circuit as a system

Inspect alternator brushes, wiring and connectors and test charging performance before replacing the regulator. The eight-wire 24-2031 unit has four-position/three-wire and six-position/five-wire connectors. Match terminal functions and battery requirements; the separate lithium-only regulator is not an AGM substitute.

Practical questions

What should I check if the relay clicks but the engine does not crank?

Start with the battery under load, battery and ground connections, and the high-current path to the starter. The relay or motor may also be faulty, but a click alone does not prove either needs replacement.

What if the starter motor spins but the engine does not turn?

Inspect the mechanical starter drive and starter clutch using the Honda procedure. Rollers, springs or related drive parts may need service; this symptom is different from a motor receiving no electrical power.

Will a new regulator cure every low-charge problem?

No. Poor connections, worn alternator brushes, rotor or stator faults and a damaged battery can also cause poor charging. Test the system before ordering, then verify charging performance after the repair.
