The 1982 CB900C Custom cam-drive selection includes distinct A and B chains as well as tensioners and guides. Identify the chain position and associated worn components before ordering; the shorter B chain and its smaller tensioner are not substitutes for the A components.

Match the 1982 Custom’s timing parts to their own circuit
The CB900C uses two cam chains. The catalog’s 126-link A chain and 82-link B chain serve different positions; the smaller B tensioner, main tensioner, springs and guide are separate components. Start with a complete inspection of the noisy or worn circuit.
Honda’s head and cylinder procedures check guide wear, tensioner slipper damage and spring condition. A new chain cannot restore a worn guide or a sticking tensioner. Keep the larger main tensioner and smaller B assembly identified when ordering; their springs and mounting positions are different.
Read the Custom’s supplements with the base timing instructions
Honda’s 1982 addendum directs the reader back to the base manual and earlier supplements for unchanged data. Keep the Custom’s cam-tension and timing procedures together, and use the updated 1982 valve-clearance check after relevant head work. A separate 82RH2015 link is not established as compatible with the featured 412H chains.
Cam Chains & Tensioners questions
Will replacing the smaller B tensioner cure every cam-chain noise?
No. Inspect both chain circuits, the guides, slippers, springs and adjustment mechanisms. Honda also lists other valve-train faults as noise sources. Identify the worn position before buying a tensioner by name alone.
Can a separate silent-chain rivet link be used with either chain?
Only when the chain manufacturer approves it for that exact chain. The featured chains are 412H; an 82RH2015 or other differently specified link is not established as compatible. Match the full chain and link specification, not just the words silent chain.
What must be checked before starting after timing work?
Use Honda’s camshaft installation sequence to verify crankshaft and camshaft marks, tensioner operation and the required final clearance checks. An apparently tight chain does not prove the cam timing is correct.
