1980 Honda CB900C Custom · Fuel System Parts Buying guide

Trace the 1980 fuel path before rebuilding the carburetors

Honda’s base Custom manual identifies 32mm VB43 carburetors, with a separate Canadian suffix. Confirm what remains fitted, then trace fuel supply, float-valve sealing and intake leaks. A changed airbox or carburetor bank can alter the parts and settings required.

Repair the leak at its source

Fuel at a bowl joint, drain screw or connector tube needs the seal for that exact location. Overflow also calls for inspection of the float valve, its seat and float movement. A bowl-gasket kit cannot repair a worn valve seat or a cracked connector, and tightening the bowl harder will not remove debris from the valve.

Keep the original intake connections working together

Engine-side holders and the larger airbox-side boots are separate four-piece sets with different clamp requirements. Check that the bank is seated evenly and the airbox remains intact. Honda’s troubleshooting includes intake leaks and a dirty air cleaner, so correct these faults before trying to tune around them.

Buying questions

Should hesitation automatically be treated with larger jets?

No. First check fuel supply, the choke, intake sealing and ignition. The accelerator pump and air-cutoff system also have separate inspection procedures. Select jet changes from the actual carburetor and tuning evidence after those faults are ruled out.

Will a basic rebuild kit fix every fuel leak?

No. Its gasket, float needle and O-rings cover only their specified positions. Trace the leak and inspect the mating seat, bowl, drain screw and connecting tubes; a damaged hard part may need a separate repair.

Can the same rubber set repair both sides of the carburetor bank?

No. Holders connect the carburetors to the engine, while the other boots connect them to the airbox. Match the side and position, then check the separate clamps and confirm that previous intake modifications have not changed the arrangement.
