Electrical repairs on a 1980 CB900C Custom can involve a year-specific main loom, smaller connecting wires or an individual ignition or charging component. Start with the affected circuit, then compare connections and included parts before choosing the scope of your repair.

Separate a no-crank fault, a cranking engine with no spark, a charging problem and a warning-light fault. They share wiring and a battery, but they do not necessarily need the same replacement part.
The 1980 Custom main-harness reference is 32100-461-000. Identify damaged wiring before choosing a complete loom or a short sub-harness. The ignition-coil connecting harness is a separate item; do not assume every branch lead comes with the main loom.
Keep component diagnosis specific
The original ignition is transistorized, with two coils serving cylinder pairs. Check the ignition supply, leads and connectors before condemning a coil or spark unit. For charging faults, test the battery, wiring and alternator before replacing the regulator.
Practical questions
Will a new harness solve every intermittent electrical fault?
A loom helps when its wiring or connectors are damaged. Loose battery cables, poor grounds, failing switches and faulty components can cause similar symptoms, so trace the affected circuit before replacing the whole harness.
What should I check if the starter turns but the engine will not fire?
Separate ignition from fuel or engine faults. Check for spark using the service procedure, then inspect the ignition power supply, coil connections, plug leads and plugs. A starter relay replacement will not by itself restore missing spark.
Why does a replacement battery keep going flat?
Check charging performance and wiring connections, then look for an unintended drain while parked. A new battery can temporarily mask a charging or wiring fault without correcting it.
