Compare the original air system with the replacement shocks
Honda’s original 1980 CB900C rear shocks use upper and lower eyes and a linked air system. Both featured replacements are 325 mm eye-to-eye coil-spring pairs with four-position preload. Match the actual mounts and supplied bushes before fitting.
The chrome-spring and all-black pairs list bushes, inserts, washers and a preload wrench. Their photographs show an eye at each end, consistent with the original mounting type. Check bush sizes and clearance against the motorcycle; the separate 52484-292-000 joint-rubber pair is not automatically a replacement for every bush supplied with an aftermarket set.
Assess lowering on the shaft-drive Custom
The 290 mm custom shock pairs in this category are shorter than the featured 325 mm sets. Sharing eye-type ends does not establish suitable ride height, travel or clearance. Have the shaft-drive suspension geometry, exhaust clearance and stand position assessed before choosing a different length; generic chain-angle advice does not apply to this motorcycle.
Buying questions
Can the original air-pressure instructions be used for these shocks?
No. The featured aftermarket sets specify four-position spring preload, while Honda’s original shocks are connected to an air system. Use the replacement maker’s installation and adjustment instructions and address the original air connections as that installation requires.
Does 325 mm prove that the shocks reproduce Honda’s original ride height?
It is the listed replacement eye-to-eye length. Confirm the fitted mounts, bush dimensions and intended application; overall length alone does not establish loaded ride height, spring rate or suspension travel. The product description is not a substitute for those installation checks.
Do the two joint rubbers replace every bush in a new shock pair?
The separate pair replaces reference 52484-292-000 at its matching mounts. The complete shock sets already list their own bushes and inserts. Compare the actual bush dimensions and instructions before adding separate rubber, nuts or washers.
