1981 Honda CB900C Custom · Fuel Tank Service Parts Buying guide

Distinguish the tank valve from the 1981 automatic fuel control

The listed M18 × 1.0 petcock controls the tank outlet. The 1981 Custom also has a separate vacuum-operated fuel-line diaphragm near the carburetor bank. Identify whether the fault is at the tank, cap, hose or automatic valve before replacing a part.

Keep the manual and automatic valves separate

Confirm the actual M18 × 1.0 tank connection, outlet direction and clearance before choosing the featured petcock. If the complaint is poor fuel delivery, Honda’s 1981 supplement also checks the downstream diaphragm and its vacuum and vent tubes. A new tank valve cannot correct a blocked diaphragm hose.

Check the tank after the repair

Confirm that the cap latches securely and its seal sits evenly. Check the petcock and hose joints for leakage and verify the intended OFF, ON and reserve operation using the applicable service procedure. Correct hardened support rubbers or a strained hose before returning the motorcycle to use.

Buying questions

Can a blocked tank vent look like a carburetor fault?

Yes. Honda includes a blocked fuel-cap vent among causes of a lean mixture or restricted fuel supply. Check venting, the strainer and fuel line before buying jets or a carburetor kit.

Will matching the thread alone guarantee the petcock fits?

No. Also compare the sealing face, outlet and hose size, lever movement and clearance around the tank and frame. An earlier or replacement tank may differ from the original year-specific fitting.

Does the 1981 automatic valve make the manual petcock unnecessary?

They are separate parts with separate functions and service checks. Retain the correct fuel-system arrangement and use the manual valve as Honda directs. Diagnose the automatic diaphragm and its hose routing rather than assuming a tank-petcock replacement services both.
