Speedometer and tachometer cables for the 1982 CB900F have separate drive connections and routing needs. The tachometer range includes 24-inch and 29-inch options, while the speedometer listing gives references without an overall length. Compare the installed cable before choosing, especially if the instrument position has changed.

Follow the fitted cable route to select its replacement
Both tachometer lengths have a listed CB900F application. Use the actual route and end fittings to choose between them rather than treating the shared year as evidence that either length suits every arrangement.
Compare the cable route and end fittings before choosing the 24-inch or 29-inch tachometer option. A longer cable is not automatically safer if it creates a tight loop. Honda directs cable lubrication before reconnection; follow the cable maker’s guidance too, especially for a replacement with different construction.
Separate a drive-opening plug from cable service
The related speedometer gear plug is 15mm outside diameter and 22mm long and is intended to keep the drive gear clean. It is a separate choice for the opening, not a working cable. Confirm the intended instrument arrangement before adding it to a cable-repair order.
Buying questions
What should I check when a mechanical gauge stops reading?
Inspect the cable for a broken inner, damaged ends and secure engagement at the drive and gauge, then check those assemblies. A replacement cable cannot repair a failed drive gearbox or instrument. Avoid forcing a mismatched end into place.
Is the longest listed tachometer cable the safest choice?
Choose the length that follows the installed route with smooth bends and adequate movement. Too short can pull at the fittings; excessive length can create loops or rubbing. Compare the actual 24-inch and 29-inch options rather than deciding from model year alone.
Can the speedometer-drive plug replace a working cable?
It closes the drive opening in a suitable custom installation; it does not transmit rotation or convert the instrument to an electronic input. Keep the correct cable for a working mechanical speedometer and verify the opening before choosing the separate plug.
