Determine piston and bore condition before buying rebuild parts for your 1981 CB900C Custom. Ring-only service retains the existing piston when suitable; the complete standard kit adds a new piston, pin and clips. Both options are supplied for one piston rather than the complete engine.

Choose rings or complete pistons from the wear measurements
The featured complete kit and ring-only set both cover one piston. On a 1981 Custom, establish the existing bore and piston condition before deciding which option is worthwhile. A new piston of standard size still needs the correct measured clearance.
Honda’s inspection checks both the cylinder and piston, including the ring grooves and the gap of each ring in its cylinder. New rings will not repair a cracked piston, worn grooves or an out-of-limit bore. Ask the rebuilder to establish the finished size before choosing the standard ring set or standard piston kit.
Keep each cylinder’s measurements and parts together
The listed ring set covers one piston. The complete kit adds one standard piston, pin and clips. Label the cylinders and record their measurements so one good bore does not stand in for all four. The Honda procedure requires engine removal for this work, so include the disturbed head and base sealing parts in the plan.
Buying questions
Does a standard-size marking mean the old piston can be reused?
No. Inspect its skirt, pin bore and ring grooves, and measure its clearance in that cylinder. A worn standard piston remains standard in name but may be unsuitable for new rings.
Can new standard rings fix an enlarged or oval bore?
No. Measure the cylinder at several heights and in two directions. If wear or previous machining requires a different finished bore size, choose the matching piston and rings with the rebuilder rather than forcing the standard set into the repair.
What checks still matter when using a complete piston kit?
Confirm the finished bore, piston clearance and ring gaps; a kit does not remove those checks. It already includes the pin and clips for one piston, so compare the supplied contents before adding duplicate small parts or calculating the order for all four cylinders.
