Replacing the rear shocks on a 1981 CB900F Supersport starts with the mounting dimensions, then the finish and service hardware. The 365mm black-and-chrome set is a different purchase from separate joint rubbers or the shorter custom shock options.

Slam the back end with this Custom Shorty Shock Absorber Set, measuring 290mm (11 3/8") eye-to-clevis, noticeably shorter than stock for custom café, bobber,...
The featured shock set combines black bodies and chrome springs. Separate joint rubbers let you address worn mounting rubber without assuming every piece shown in the category is included with the shocks.
The featured pair lists four spring-preload positions and includes bushings, inserts, washers and a preload wrench. Preload changes the spring setting; it does not repair a leaking or ineffective damper. Honda’s original F units have separate damping adjustments, which are not promised for this replacement pair.
Treat short shocks as a separate modification
The 290mm choices are custom-length units, not another finish of the 365mm pair. Check the complete geometry, travel and clearance implications before changing length. Original F damper reservoirs are pressurized; do not open or heat them as a home repair.
Buying questions
Should I replace the shocks or only their joint rubbers?
Inspect the damper bodies for leakage and damage, assess damping, and check the mounts for movement. Sound dampers with worn joint rubber may need mounting repair; leaking or ineffective dampers need a different solution. Confirm the replacement bush dimensions and hardware fit before assembly.
Will turning up spring preload cure a bouncing or leaking shock?
No. Preload adjusts the spring setting for the load; it cannot restore lost damping or seal a leaking body. Inspect the damper and use the fitted shock’s instructions for adjustment. Do not assume the replacement pair has the original F unit’s separate rebound and compression controls.
What should be checked before fitting a different shock length?
Compare upper and lower mounts, installed length, suspension travel and tire, chain and exhaust clearances through movement. Include stand operation in the assessment. The listed 290mm custom units require a modification plan rather than a direct stock-length substitution.
