The bearing conversion kit includes upper and lower tapered bearing races. Separate stem nuts carry different reference numbers, while the stem washer is available on its own for the matching hardware position.

Plan bearing service as an assembly job

The tapered kit includes upper and lower bearings with races. Inspect the stem and bearing seats, and use the kit’s installation guidance together with the Honda assembly procedure. Tapered-bearing setup needs a correct adjustment and final free-movement check; the stem top nut and adjusting hardware have different jobs.

Do not interchange similar-looking nuts

The stem nut replaces 90304-425-000; the head lock nut replaces 90302-425-830. Use their assembly positions and references to tell them apart. The linked stem washer replaces 90503-425-000 and is sold separately, so check whether your repair requires that piece too.

Buying questions

Can tightening the steering head cure a notch at straight ahead?

Adjustment can address incorrect free play, but it cannot repair pitted or notched bearing surfaces. Inspect the bearings and races when the steering feels rough or catches at center. Avoid tightening until the steering binds to hide worn parts.

Are the stem top nut and threaded head lock nut interchangeable?

No. They occupy different positions and have different references: 90304-425-000 for the stem nut and 90302-425-830 for the head lock nut. Match the assembly drawing and inspect the threads; do not apply one fastener’s tightening procedure to the other.

What should be checked after fitting tapered bearings?

Follow the bearing kit and Honda assembly guidance, then verify smooth steering without excessive play or binding. Check cable and hose movement through the steering range too. Recheck the installation as the kit instructions require rather than assuming a new bearing is correctly adjusted by feel alone.
