Lay out the clutch components by type when planning service on a 1981 CB900C Custom. The friction and steel stacks each contain distinct parts with different usage counts. Spring and damper packages serve additional components, so they should follow inspection rather than be assumed included with plates.

The cable-operated wet clutch uses two friction-plate types, ordinary steel plates and a distinct riveted steel B plate. Diagnose slip or drag, then measure the opened assembly before choosing replacements.
The listed stack uses seven type 1 friction plates and one type 2, with six ordinary steel plates and one riveted steel B plate. These are individual components, not interchangeable descriptions of a complete kit. Follow the Honda assembly sequence rather than grouping all similar-looking plates together.
Separate plate wear, spring wear and damping
Inspect springs against the service limits instead of assuming stronger springs will cure every slipping clutch. The rubber-damper repair kit addresses a separate part of the assembly; it does not supply the friction and steel plate stack.
Practical questions
Should I replace friction plates as soon as the clutch slips?
First check for insufficient cable free play. If adjustment is correct, inspect friction wear and spring condition. Honda lists both worn discs and weak springs as possible causes, so diagnose the assembly before ordering.
What can cause clutch drag even with new friction plates?
Too much free play can prevent full release, and warped steel plates can cause creeping with the lever pulled in. Check adjustment, plate flatness and assembly order rather than replacing friction plates again.
Can the riveted steel B plate be replaced with an ordinary steel plate?
Use the specified plate type and stack arrangement. The riveted B plate is a distinct double-plate component; the catalogue does not establish an ordinary single plate as a substitute.
