1981 Honda CB900C Custom · Cam-Chain Service Parts Buying guide
The CB900C uses two cam chains. The catalog’s 126-link A chain and 82-link B chain serve different positions; the smaller B tensioner, main tensioner, springs and guide are separate components. Start with a complete inspection of the noisy or worn circuit.

Honda’s head and cylinder procedures check guide wear, tensioner slipper damage and spring condition. A new chain cannot restore a worn guide or a sticking tensioner. Keep the larger main tensioner and smaller B assembly identified when ordering; their springs and mounting positions are different.
Honda’s 1981 Custom supplement gives a cold-engine tension procedure involving both front and rear adjusters. Use that exact sequence and inspect worn slippers, guides and springs before deciding which parts need replacement. For any joined chain, use only a link approved for its exact construction; the separate 82RH2015 link is not a verified match for these 412H chains.
No. Inspect both chain circuits, the guides, slippers, springs and adjustment mechanisms. Honda also lists other valve-train faults as noise sources. Identify the worn position before buying a tensioner by name alone.
Only when the chain manufacturer approves it for that exact chain. The featured chains are 412H; an 82RH2015 or other differently specified link is not established as compatible. Match the full chain and link specification, not just the words silent chain.
Use Honda’s camshaft installation sequence to verify crankshaft and camshaft marks, tensioner operation and the required final clearance checks. An apparently tight chain does not prove the cam timing is correct.
