1970 Honda CB750K · Pistons & rings Buying guide

Match piston size and compare rings, pins and clips

Two standard piston kits can supply different combinations of rings and clips. Confirm the required cylinder size first, then compare the included pieces and the number of pistons covered by each listing.

Measure the bore before choosing standard or oversize

Honda specifies a 61mm bore for the original CB750 engine. A previous rebuild may have changed that size, so have the present cylinders and pistons measured before ordering standard, +0.25mm or +0.50mm parts.

Match the rings to the piston as well as the bore

Record the piston maker, size and ring-groove requirements before ordering separate rings. A standard-size label does not establish compatibility with every aftermarket piston. Have the machinist confirm the piston manufacturer’s required clearance and the correct rings for the measured, finished bore before choosing standard or oversize parts.

Common questions

Why are there two standard piston kits?

Their contents differ. One includes rings and excludes clips; the other includes clips and excludes rings. Both are listed for one piston. Compare the package with the separate parts you already have or intend to purchase.

What should be measured before ordering replacement rings?

Have each bore checked for diameter, taper and out-of-round, and have the piston grooves and the proposed ring end gaps assessed. Match the rings to the fitted piston and finished bore. Use the piston and ring maker’s specifications rather than applying one assumed clearance to every replacement kit.

Should I order oversize rings to suit cylinder wear?

Have the cylinder and piston requirements assessed before ordering. An oversize ring listing names a specific size; it must match the piston and cylinder combination selected for the rebuild, rather than simply compensate for an unmeasured wear concern.
