Diagnose slipping before ordering plates

Honda’s US-market CB650SC shop manual lists worn discs, weak springs and hydraulic sticking among the possible causes of clutch slip. Establish the cause before deciding that a plate order covers the repair.

Include the surrounding clutch in the assessment

The same manual also calls for checking clutch-outer slots and needle-bearing condition. Include those checks when defining the repair; buying plates alone does not establish that the remaining assembly is serviceable.

Steel & Friction Clutch Plates questions

Are these complete friction-plate and steel-plate sets?

No. Each friction-plate order supplies one plate, and each steel-plate order supplies one plate. The listed 1983–85 CB650SC application uses six friction and five steel plates per motorcycle. Keep those installed counts separate from the single-piece sales units and order from the inspected repair.

Do friction discs and steel plates need the same inspection?

Honda’s manual distinguishes friction-disc condition and thickness checks from steel-plate warpage checks. Use the applicable service limits for each type before deciding which pieces need replacement.

What preparation is documented before fitting the plates?

Honda’s US-market CB650SC manual says to coat the discs and plates with clean engine oil before installation. Follow the replacement plate maker’s instructions too; the cited manual passage does not specify a soaking duration.
