1979 Honda CB650 · Fork Seal Tools Buying guide

Choose a driver for the fork being serviced

The carbon-steel tool has a split design and supports 35mm or 36mm fork applications. Check the actual fork and service procedure; the tool itself is not a replacement suspension component.

Verify the actual fork size

The CB650 application lists 35mm forks, while the tool also covers compatible 36mm forks. Measure the assembly now fitted rather than selecting it from the frame year alone. A previous front-end conversion may require a different driver.

Prepare the seal service separately

The driver helps with seal installation but does not supply new seals or establish the correct oil or assembly settings. Identify the needed seal parts and follow the fork service procedure before beginning the job.

Buying questions

Should I choose the driver from the seal’s 48 mm outside diameter?

The 35/36 mm tool selection refers to the compatible fork size; the listed CB650 application is 35 mm. The oil seal’s full 35 × 48 × 10.5/11 mm specification describes separate dimensions. Match the driver to the fitted fork and the seal to its complete specification.

Why use a seal driver instead of applying force at one spot?

The driver is intended to distribute installation force evenly around the seal, reducing the chance of cocking or damaging it. Use the fork’s prescribed installation method and inspect the seat first; a correctly sized driver cannot make a damaged housing serviceable.

Can I choose it solely from the model year?

Measure the fitted fork first. Swapped forks can change the required driver size, and the service instructions remain necessary even when the motorcycle’s original application is listed.
