When keeping mechanical instruments on your 1979 CB650, choose the cable for the affected gauge. Removing a cable calls for a different part: the tach plug seals its retained drive, while the wheel-drive plug closes the unused speedometer connection. Compare each fitting first.

Match the cable reference or unused-drive interface
The replacement cables have separate references. The tach-drive plug includes an O-ring; the wheel-drive plug closes the retained original speedometer-drive opening after cable removal. Neither plug supplies the parts for an electronic instrument conversion.
Speedometer cable 51-2303 references 44830-KB4-700 / 44830-356-010 and explicitly lists the 1979 CB650. Tachometer cable 73-0196 references 37260-426-000. Its package is one cable; the gauge, engine-side drive and retaining hardware are separate.
Compare the complete plug interfaces
The tach plug includes an O-ring and is specified for an approximately 15 mm screw-retained fitting with a 10.5 mm groove. The separate wheel-drive plug is approximately 15 mm outside diameter and 22 mm long, intended to close the retained original speedometer-drive opening after cable removal.
Buying questions
Will an original-application cable reach gauges that have been relocated?
The complete cable records give replacement references but no numerical cable lengths. Obtain the appropriate length and end-fitting specifications and compare them with the required route before selecting a cable for a changed instrument position; the model listing alone cannot settle the reach.
Can the two drive plugs be substituted because both mention 15 mm?
That shared nominal diameter does not establish interchange. The tach plug’s record specifies a retaining groove, screw-held interface and O-ring, while the wheel-drive plug is identified for the retained speedometer-drive opening. Match the intended interface rather than using diameter as the only purchase check.
