1982 Honda CB900C Custom · Air Filters Buying guide
The stock-type filter services the original shared airbox. A 54mm clamp-on pod is a different installation, with its own mounting and clearance checks. On the 1982 Custom, also preserve the separate breather and automatic-fuel-control connections when assessing a modified intake.
Honda’s service procedure removes the cover and element-retaining spring, then checks the element for dirt or damage. Make sure those pieces and the carburetor boots are present and seated correctly. Use the replacement filter’s own care instructions rather than assuming a paper element should be washed or oiled like a pod.
The black pod has a 54mm mounting opening, is sold individually and is supplied dry. That dimension must match the outside of the carburetor inlet, not its internal venturi size. Check adjacent-filter clearance, mounting and breather arrangements, then assess mixture and running with the actual intake and exhaust combination.
No. Honda’s 32mm figure describes the original carburetor venturi. A pod clamps around the outside of the air inlet. Measure that outside diameter and check the filter’s mounting depth and surrounding clearance before ordering.
Yes. Honda lists a dirty air cleaner among rich-mixture causes. Inspect and service the filter and airbox first, while also checking choke operation; do not compensate for a restriction by changing jets before diagnosing it.
Inspect the airbox cover, retaining spring, boots and breather hoses. Honda also calls for draining deposits from the breather drain tube and replacing its plug. Keep those connections correct when repairing the original intake or assessing a conversion.
