Keep the mechanical speedometer working on your 1983 CB650SC with a verified replacement cable. The separate wheel-drive plug is useful only when that cable is removed and the original drive remains. Identify the planned repair or modification, then compare the relevant connections.
The black replacement cable uses reference 44830-ME5-405. The separate plug closes the retained original wheel-drive opening after cable removal, helping keep its gear clean. Check the opening and dimensions before selecting that modification part.
The speedometer cable replaces reference 44830-ME5-405 for the later CB650SC. Inspect its end fittings and route when diagnosing an inoperative instrument. A cable cannot correct an incompatible gauge ratio or a damaged drive assembly by itself.
Check the retained wheel-drive opening
Choose the approximately 15mm outside-diameter, 22mm-long plug when removing the mechanical speedometer cable while retaining the original wheel drive. It closes that opening to help keep the gear clean. Verify the fit and retention; the plug does not include a drive gear or the components of an electronic conversion.
Speedometer Cable & Drive Plug questions
What should I check before treating the cable installation as finished?
Route the cable in broad curves with enough slack for steering and fully engage the inner cable at both ends. Confirm smooth speedometer operation without needle bounce. A changed instrument position still needs its own connection and routed-length check.
Does the plug replace a working speedometer cable?
It closes the retained wheel-drive opening only after the cable is removed. If retaining the mechanical speedometer, choose its replacement cable instead. Compare the approximately 15mm outside diameter and 22mm length before choosing the plug for a modification.
Will a new cable cure every speedometer fault?
The instrument, cable and wheel drive need separate checks. Identify the failed part and verify any custom gauge ratio before deciding which component to replace.
