Do not choose a tach cable by year alone

Both a 24-inch and a 29-inch tachometer cable list the 1981–82 CB900F. Compare the installed cable, its end fittings and the required route before choosing. These alternatives do not establish that both lengths suit every cockpit arrangement.

Handle original instruments carefully

Honda’s F instrument procedure separates the mechanical cables, mounting nuts and bulb holders. It warns against leaving the instruments upside down because internal oil can reach the lens. Inspect the supports and cable ends while the cluster is accessible; custom gauges still need an independent ratio, bracket and wiring plan.

Buying questions

Does a jumping needle mean the gauge must be replaced?

Inspect the cable for damage, tight bends and poor engagement at both ends, then check the drive and instrument. A binding or worn cable can disturb the reading. Use the Honda cable-service guidance and isolate the fault before buying a custom gauge.

How should I choose between the two tachometer cable lengths?

Follow the actual route from the drive to the instrument and compare both end fittings. The listed 24-inch and 29-inch options share model coverage, so year alone does not choose between them. Allow a smooth route without stretching or a tight loop.

What if a warning or illumination bulb still does not work after replacement?

Check that the correct bulb is seated and inspect its holder and wiring for loose connections, open circuits or shorts. Honda includes those checks in the F instrument procedure. A cable replacement will not repair an electrical lighting fault.
