1981 Honda CB650 · Steering Bearings & Hardware Buying guide

Plan the bearing conversion and stem hardware

The selected kit includes upper and lower tapered bearing races. The nut and washer have their own references, so compare the fitted stem before adding worn or missing hardware to the order.

Review the complete steering assembly

The tapered-bearing conversion is listed for the standard CB650 application. Confirm the steering stem and frame arrangement before ordering for a modified motorcycle. Use the correct installation and adjustment instructions; the kit description is not a bearing-preload specification.

Keep nut and washer separate

The steering-stem nut replaces 90304-425-000 and the washer replaces 90503-425-000. Both are separately listed. Compare the old hardware and its seating arrangement during inspection rather than assuming new bearings mean every stem fastener must be replaced.

Ordering questions

Does tightening the upper stem nut set the bearing adjustment?

The stem-nut guidance calls for setting bearing preload by the correct service procedure first, then fitting the correct washer and tightening the upper nut without disturbing that adjustment. Check for smooth steering with no notchiness, binding or play afterward; extra top-nut tightening is not a substitute for diagnosis.

Can an ordinary washer substitute if its hole fits the stem?

The specified washer’s thickness and seating surface affect the upper hardware’s clamping. Compare the original arrangement and reference 90503-425-000 rather than choosing by hole diameter alone. The matching nut and washer are separately supplied, so inspect both during steering service.

Will the kit work with a transplanted front end?

A transplanted stem or fork assembly needs its own fitment check. Compare the stem and bearing arrangement before relying on the original CB650 application.
