Use this 1981 CB900F route to plan the sealing and fastening pieces needed when exhaust joints are opened. Individual headpipe gaskets, a muffler-joint gasket and a stud-and-nut package serve separate positions. Compare the installed exhaust before relying on a shared model application after modifications.

A port gasket is a single-piece purchase. The stud package lists eight studs with eight flange nuts, while the muffler-joint gasket remains separate. Build the order around the connections actually being serviced.
Match the cylinder-head port and muffler-joint seals to their own connections. The featured headpipe gasket is sold each. Do not add the separately tagged crossover gasket on the assumption that its explicit 1982 F application also covers this 1981 exhaust.
Plan seals and fasteners from their condition
Inspect stud threads, flange nuts, collars and the exhaust supports while the system is accessible. The stud package contains eight studs and eight nuts but does not repair stripped cylinder-head threads. Resolve damaged threads and misalignment before fitting new seals or applying the specified tightening procedure.
Buying questions
How do I distinguish a headpipe seal from a muffler-joint gasket?
Identify the connection being opened and compare the removed part, joint dimensions and replacement reference. The head-to-headpipe seal sits at the cylinder head; a muffler-joint or crossover seal serves another connection. Similar category names do not make them interchangeable.
Will a new stud set repair damaged threads in the cylinder head?
No. Inspect both the studs and the threaded holes. A stripped or previously repaired hole needs assessment and a suitable thread-repair plan before new hardware is fitted. Do not force a new stud into damaged threads or compensate with extra tightening.
What should I check if the exhaust will not line up with new gaskets fitted?
Check that the correct seals and collars are seated and that the headpipes, joints and mounting brackets match the fitted system. Support and align the assembly according to its service procedure before tightening. Do not pull a misaligned exhaust into place with the studs.
