1980 Honda CB900C Custom · Tank Caps & Petcocks Buying guide

Check the 1980 tank fitting and vent before replacing the petcock

A petcock, filler cap and tank support rubber solve different problems. Before replacing a valve, inspect the tank connection, fuel line and venting; a restriction upstream can mimic carburetor trouble. Fuel leaks must be corrected before the motorcycle is run.

Match the installed tank, not only the registration year

A replacement tank can change the petcock connection. Compare nominal thread size and pitch directly, as well as the sealing arrangement and hose outlet. The smaller 1980 listing’s measured nut diameter is not the same thing as its nominal M16 thread size.

Check the tank after the repair

Confirm that the cap latches securely and its seal sits evenly. Check the petcock and hose joints for leakage and verify the intended OFF, ON and reserve operation using the applicable service procedure. Correct hardened support rubbers or a strained hose before returning the motorcycle to use.

Buying questions

Can a blocked tank vent look like a carburetor fault?

Yes. Honda includes a blocked fuel-cap vent among causes of a lean mixture or restricted fuel supply. Check venting, the strainer and fuel line before buying jets or a carburetor kit.

Will matching the thread alone guarantee the petcock fits?

No. Also compare the sealing face, outlet and hose size, lever movement and clearance around the tank and frame. An earlier or replacement tank may differ from the original year-specific fitting.

What should be checked when fitting the replacement cap?

Compare the hinge, latch and sealing arrangement with the actual tank. The listed cap includes a gasket and two keys; confirm that both keys work, the latch closes and the tank vents correctly before riding.
