1982 Honda CB650 · Wheel Retainer Tools Buying guide

Choose the working end for the correct retainer

Both tools are intended for removal and fitting of their specified retainer rings. Compare the wheel position and engagement features rather than assuming one tool covers both ends of the motorcycle.

Keep front and rear applications separate

The front tool is listed for the front wheel bearing retainer ring. The rear tool covers the rear wheel hub bearing-retainer arrangement on the listed CB650. Retainer shape, not the shared 1/2-inch drive opening, determines which working end is appropriate.

Check replaced wheels directly

A different rim alone may not identify the hub underneath, and a complete wheel conversion can change the retainer. Compare the fitted hub and ring before relying on the standard-model tool application. Follow the correct service instructions for removal and refitting.

Buying questions

Does the rear tool’s sprocket-carrier description apply to this CB650?

The rear tool lists several Honda applications. For this CB650 application, it specifically identifies the rear wheel hub bearing retainer; sprocket-carrier work is listed for other models. Use the model-specific application and the service procedure for the fitted wheel.

Why use the retainer tool instead of driving the ring with a punch?

The tool engages the special retainer for removal and installation. Its product guidance warns that a punch can damage the ring or hub. Support the wheel securely and follow the correct service procedure for direction and torque; the tool does not replace those instructions.

Will the tools fit replacement wheels?

Check the installed hub and retainer against the tool’s stated application. A wheel that fits the motorcycle may have a different retainer arrangement, and the original model listing does not establish tool fit after a wheel conversion.
