1980 Honda CB900C Custom · Engine Parts Buying guide
The CB900C has an air-cooled, 16-valve DOHC engine, a five-speed main gearbox and a separate dual-range subtransmission. An oil filter, a valve shim and a piston kit belong to different jobs; diagnose the fault before buying internal parts.

Low compression can come from valve clearance, valve sealing, valve timing or cylinder wear. Honda calls for bore measurements at several heights and in two directions, plus piston clearance, ring-groove clearance and ring end-gap checks. The standard ring set and complete piston kit each cover one piston; neither corrects a worn or previously enlarged bore.
The linked 52-link primary chain is inside the engine. It is separate from the two cam chains, the dual-range subtransmission and the shaft final drive. For head or cylinder removal, Honda calls for engine removal; allow for that access and the disturbed gaskets before buying a piston kit.
Only if inspection shows the rings are the fault and the piston and bore remain serviceable. Check valve clearance and sealing first, then measure the cylinders and ring grooves. Standard rings cannot compensate for excessive bore wear or an oversize piston.
Honda’s CB900C procedure calls for removing the engine for those jobs. Plan lifting support, workspace and the disturbed gaskets before ordering. Routine valve-clearance checking does not require the same strip-down.
Keep the housing spring and support washer in their correct positions, and inspect the cover and center-bolt O-rings plus the drain-plug sealing washer. These are separate from the paper element. A spin-on conversion needs the filter specified for its adapter.
