Check the 1980 cover screws before replacing the chrome

The chrome spark-advancer cover protects an ignition assembly; it is separate from the generator and clutch covers. Match its mounting and rubber sealing ring, and check for damage behind a dented cover rather than treating the job as chrome replacement alone.

A new cover does not repair the mechanism beneath it

Honda checks spark-advancer operation as part of ignition service. If the cover has been struck, inspect the enclosed components and clearance before fitting the replacement. A damaged advancer or pulser assembly needs its own diagnosis; changing the outer cover will not correct ignition timing faults.

Resolve the 1980 screw-length distinction first

The three-screw pack contains 6 × 25mm fasteners. Its 1980 application note warns that some covers use 6 × 26mm screws. Compare the originals and the fitted cover before selecting it, and order the rubber O-ring separately if inspection shows it needs renewal.

Buying questions

Does a replacement chrome cover cure an ignition misfire?

Not by itself. Inspect for contact or damage underneath, then follow Honda’s ignition checks if the symptom remains. A damaged internal component needs its own repair; avoid disturbing pulser settings during a cosmetic cover change.

Should a flat paper gasket be used with this cover?

The listed sealing part is a rubber O-ring, reference 30372-425-000. Match the old ring and its seating area. A gasket for another engine cover does not become suitable because the outer cover looks similar.

Will the 6 × 25mm screw set suit every 1980 cover?

The product specifically requires checking the original length because it also identifies 6 × 26mm screws on 1980 applications. Compare under-head length, thread and the fitted cover; do not assume the one-millimetre difference is irrelevant.
