Pistons and piston rings help seal combustion pressure, control oil on the cylinder walls and transfer heat from the piston into the cylinder. Worn rings, damaged pistons or excessive cylinder wear can contribute to low compression, blow-by, oil consumption and exhaust smoke, but proper inspection and measurement are required before choosing replacement parts.
